Left Caucus condemns in no uncertain terms the actions of Trump supporters who descended on Washington, D.C. yesterday with the clear intent of fomenting an insurrection against our democracy. Left Caucus further condemns President Trump specifically for his clear incitements of violence, hatred, and fascism. We stand in solidarity with members of the House of Representatives, including Congresswoman Cori Bush, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Nevada Congressman Steven Horsford, calling for the immediate impeachment, removal from office, and barring from any future federal service of Donald Trump.
With the tacit support of the United States Capitol Police, domestic terrorists took hold of our nation’s seat of government. Police historically have shown no hesitation in turning the weapons of the ruling class against Americans protesting injustice. As we witnessed in the summer of 2020, police showed virtually no restraint in their tactics against Black Lives Matter protesters, employing tanks, rubber bullets, pepper spray, tear gas, and live ammunition. These methods of crowd control were notably absent in yesterday’s paltry police response.
“Many of us anticipated President Trump’s inability to participate in the peaceful transition of power,” said Chris Roberts, Chair of Left Caucus. “His followers remain committed to the lie that he was the victim of massive voter fraud. Many of these same people who stormed the Capitol criticized Black Lives Matter protesters and applauded the police violence against them. Their attempts to overthrow democracy and replace it with fascism must be opposed by every and any means possible.”
Our nation remains at risk between today and the inauguration of President-Elect Joe Biden. Left Caucus calls on our congressional delegation and all of Congress to impeach and remove Donald Trump from office as expeditiously as possible. We also reject all calls to increase police funding or expand police authority in response to yesterday’s terrorism. The only solution to the problem of police enabling fascism is to abolish both.
